The police in north Kolkata arrested a youth for forcibly marrying a minor girl in the Jorabagan area. Allegations suggest that he eloped with her after the marriage. The minor girl was rescued from Salop crossing in Howrah following a complaint received by the police.
A complaint was filed by Deepak Sharma, the legal guardian of the girl, alleging that Arman Alam abducted and forcibly married the 16-year-old girl before fleeing the area. Acting on the complaint, the police arrested Arman Alam from Howrah district’s Domjur area. A case has been registered against him under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012.
Following the rescue of the minor girl, she underwent a physical examination, and a confidential statement was recorded in accordance with the law. Police suspect that Arman had intentions of forcibly converting the minor before his arrest. The incident has drawn attention amidst claims by central Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders regarding such occurrences in West Bengal, expressing concerns over demographic changes in the state.
