Members of the Biju Yuva Janata Dal (BYJD) and Biju Chhatra Janata Dal (BCJD), youth and student wings of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), protested at Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi’s residence in Bhubaneswar, urging his resignation due to the deteriorating law and order situation in the state. The agitation, directed by BJD President Naveen Patnaik, was led by BYJD President Chinmaya Sahu and BCJD President Ipsita Sahoo to address rising crime rates and public insecurity.
The regional party highlighted the need for improved governance and security, with hundreds of youth, student leaders, and party members participating in the movement. BJD sources expressed concern over the government’s negligence, attributing the alarming law-and-order situation to a lack of focus on public safety, leading to increased criminal activities and a sense of insecurity among citizens.
BJD demanded immediate stringent actions from the state government to restore public trust and ensure peace and security. Recent criminal incidents have drawn severe criticism from both the opposition BJD and the Indian National Congress, emphasizing the urgency of addressing the prevailing lawlessness and fear in the state.
The tragic death of GRP constable Soumya Ranjan Swain, who was lynched by a mob over alleged sexual assault accusations in the Balianta area near Bhubaneswar, has sparked outrage. The deceased’s family and villagers from Maujpur in Cuttack district protested, seeking justice, financial support for the bereaved family, and the release of a friend detained by the police for being present during the incident.
The Commissionerate police have made arrests in connection with the constable’s killing, but the incident has further fueled concerns about law enforcement and public safety in the state.
