Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and YSR Congress Party president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy criticized the coalition government for failing to purchase even 10% of the total tobacco output. This failure has created opportunities for middlemen and syndicates to exploit the farmers. Jagan assured tobacco farmers of the party’s unwavering support and pledged to fight for their cause.

During a meeting with tobacco farmers, Jagan announced plans to tour West Godavari and other areas soon to show solidarity with the farmers. He emphasized that the YSRCP would intensify pressure on the government by organizing visits to Gopalapuram or Jangareddygudem to ensure that farmers receive fair treatment. Jagan warned that if the government does not address the farmers’ demands, he would lead protests in Kandakuru until their concerns are met.

Jagan highlighted that out of the total tobacco yield of 232 million kgs, only 38 million kgs have been purchased even after 94 days of auctions. This has led to a drastic drop in prices, falling as low as Rs 130 per kg, despite Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu’s directive that prices should not dip below Rs 200. Jagan attributed these issues to the influence of syndicates and middlemen, coupled with the government’s failure to procure the produce.

The YSRCP leader criticized the government for not taking action against traders or canceling licenses, which has pushed farmers to resort to distress sales. He urged the government to engage Markfed to stimulate competition and boost farmers’ prospects. Jagan recalled the success of the Market Intervention Fund of Rs 3,000 crore implemented during their term, which aided in stabilizing prices and supporting crop procurement efforts.

Jagan emphasized the importance of farmers’ prosperity for the overall well-being of the State and vowed to continue advocating for their rights. He expressed determination to fight until justice is served to the farmers who are currently facing hardships due to the government’s inaction. Farmers, expressing distress over unsold stocks and the looming end of July, fear that traders may shift operations to Karnataka, leaving them in a precarious situation.
