YSR Congress Party Member of Parliament Maddila Gurumoorthy has submitted an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha, calling for an immediate discussion on the deteriorating law and order situation in Andhra Pradesh. Gurumoorthy highlighted a concerning increase in police excesses, crimes against women, atrocities against Scheduled Castes, political violence, and violations of civil liberties in the state, emphasizing the issue’s critical public importance.
He pointed out recent deaths allegedly linked to police harassment, including custodial deaths like those of Sai Krishna in Krishna district and Yedukondalu in SPSR Nellore district. Other cases mentioned were Mala Gangamma in Kurnool, Kranti Kumar in Krishna district, and Sk. Dariya Hussain of Piduguralla, who reportedly left a suicide note alleging police harassment. These incidents have raised serious concerns about custodial safety and police accountability.
Gurumoorthy also highlighted that between June 2024 and March 2026, Andhra Pradesh reported 209 crimes against women, including rape, sexual assault, attempted rape, sexual harassment, physical assaults, murders, suspicious deaths, and suicides or suicide attempts related to harassment. The state also witnessed 69 reported incidents involving Scheduled Castes, encompassing murders, custodial violence, police excesses, social boycott, land grabbing, house demolitions, and offenses under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
He further cited 133 reported incidents of political violence in the state, which included murders, attempted murders, kidnappings, physical attacks, property destruction, and alleged suicides due to political harassment. Gurumoorthy mentioned 12 adverse observations by the Andhra Pradesh High Court on police functioning and 79 documented law and order incidents, indicating a broader breakdown of governance and civil liberties in the state. Through the adjournment motion, he urged the Centre to demand a comprehensive report from the Andhra Pradesh government, conduct impartial and time-bound investigations into all reported incidents, hold accountable those responsible for violations, and take immediate action to restore the rule of law and protect the constitutional rights of all citizens.
