Zachary Svajda, ranked 85th in the ATP, achieved a major milestone in his French Open debut by defeating 25th seed Francisco Cerundolo in a thrilling five-set match at Stade Roland Garros. Svajda, aged 23, secured a 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 6-3 victory, marking his first appearance in the fourth round of a Grand Slam tournament.
Despite initially losing momentum to Cerundolo’s comeback, Svajda managed to break Cerundolo’s serve twice in the final set, ultimately clinching the match. This win holds special significance for Svajda, who honored his late father, Tom, by pointing to the sky after the upset victory over Cerundolo.
With this triumph, Svajda has advanced to a new career-high ranking of 59 in the ATP Live Rankings post the French Open. His next challenge in Paris will be against the 10th seed, Flavio Cobolli, who recently defeated Learner Tien to secure a spot in the fourth round.
Cobolli, currently ranked 14th in the world, expressed his focus on taking each match as it comes in the competitive Roland Garros draw. He acknowledged the potential for a new Grand Slam champion but emphasized his concentration on the upcoming tough matches.
