Veteran actress Zeenat Aman recently discussed the portrayal of women in Bollywood during her conversation with the creators of the documentary ‘Journey Into India’. She highlighted that many actresses in the industry often have superficial roles, primarily involving singing, dancing, and being decorative around male leads.
Aman expressed her observation that a significant portion of female characters in Bollywood films are limited to ornamental roles. However, she noted a positive shift in the industry, acknowledging that leading ladies are now being offered more substantial and meaningful roles.
The actress emphasized the changing landscape in Bollywood, where women are increasingly demanding and receiving roles that offer depth and significance. Aman praised this development, stating that it is essential for Indian women to have roles that go beyond mere ornamentation and allow for genuine identification.
Zeenat Aman, who began her Bollywood career after winning the Femina Miss India and Miss Asia Pacific International pageants in 1970, gained fame with her role in Dev Anand’s ‘Haré Rama Haré Krishna’. She went on to star in several successful films, including ‘Yaadon Ki Baaraat’, ‘Roti Kapada Aur Makaan’, ‘Hum Kisise Kum Naheen’, and ‘The Great Gambler’.
