Zoho co-founder and former CEO Sridhar Vembu highlighted the significance of technological self-reliance following recent US restrictions on advanced AI models. The US government’s export controls led to the suspension of Anthropic’s AI models, Mythos and Fable, for users outside the US. Vembu stressed that technology plays a crucial role in national security and sovereignty, indicating a shift in geopolitical dynamics.
The co-founder described technology as the “ultimate weapon,” underscoring the close link between national sovereignty, security, and technological capabilities. He emphasized the need for India to bolster its domestic technology ecosystem in light of global developments. Vembu urged Indian organizations to leverage smaller AI models, including those from India and China, to enhance their technological capabilities.
Vembu called for increased investments in research and development, particularly in the field of cutting-edge AI models. He noted the substantial financial resources and access to advanced GPUs required for training the latest AI models, which are currently concentrated in a few countries. The co-founder suggested that India should focus on cost-effective research approaches rather than matching the spending levels of global AI leaders.
The entrepreneur expressed confidence in Zoho’s alternative R&D strategies, emphasizing the importance of sustained innovation and patience in achieving results. While acknowledging the high costs associated with frontier AI development, Vembu encouraged India to pursue innovative and resource-efficient approaches to build technological capabilities.
