Telugu cinema has always excelled at blending raw emotion with high-voltage action, and Sugriva is a sterling example of this tradition done right. Directed by Cheranjevi Nartu, this emotionally charged thriller tells the story of an ordinary man pushed to extraordinary limits — and it delivers on almost every front. Whether you’re a fan of family dramas or gritty underworld narratives, Sugriva offers a compelling cinematic experience that lingers long after the credits roll.

Sugriva is a non-linear emotional thriller about a devoted father who enters the criminal underworld to fund his daughter’s life-saving surgery. Backed by strong performances, sharp direction, and a resonant emotional core, it is one of the more satisfying Telugu releases of 2026. Recommended watch.

Plot Summary

Balu is a content, simple man living a peaceful life alongside his wife Prasanthi and their beloved daughter Akshara. When a sudden accident leaves Akshara requiring an expensive surgery that the family cannot afford, Balu is left with no choice but to venture into the dangerous underworld. What follows is a tense, emotionally layered journey as a loving father transforms into a fierce survivor navigating crime and chaos. Drawing subtle inspiration from the mythological tale of Sugriva, the film explores how extraordinary circumstances reshape an ordinary man’s identity, morality, and destiny.

Performances

Balu Charan anchors the film with a powerhouse performance. His portrayal of Balu is nuanced — capturing both the tenderness of a devoted father and the fierce desperation of a man with nothing left to lose. The emotional range he brings to the role makes Balu’s transformation feel authentic and deeply moving.

Kajal Tiwari as Prasanthi is equally impressive, bringing warmth, strength, and emotional depth to a role that could have easily been underwritten. She holds her own in every scene she shares with Balu Charan.

Karan Vijay makes for a formidable antagonist, bringing genuine menace and screen presence that keeps the tension alive throughout the second half. Suman Shetty and the supporting ensemble round out the cast effectively, each adding their own texture to the world of the film.

Technical Craft

Director Cheranjevi Nartu handles the non-linear screenplay with a confident hand, maintaining suspense and dramatic momentum without letting the narrative feel disjointed. His storytelling approach — weaving philosophical undertones alongside visceral action — gives Sugriva a distinctive personality.

DOP Lucky Ekari’s cinematography is a notable highlight. The visual contrast between the warmth of Balu’s domestic life and the cold, shadowy darkness of the criminal underworld is beautifully rendered, reinforcing the thematic divide at the heart of the story.

Ajey Patnaik’s background score elevates key emotional and action sequences, knowing precisely when to amplify and when to pull back. The music by Vijay Kurakula and Navanith Chari complements the storytelling without overshadowing it. Editor Bobby Kadali keeps the narrative crisp, ensuring that the non-linear structure serves tension rather than confusion.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths:

  • Powerful, emotionally resonant central performance by Balu Charan
  • Well-executed non-linear narrative that sustains suspense
  • Striking cinematography that visually reinforces the film’s themes
  • Strong supporting cast, especially Kajal Tiwari and Karan Vijay
  • Effective background score that enhances emotional beats
  • Meaningful blend of action, sentiment, and subtle humour

Weaknesses:

  • Runtime pacing may test patience in a few mid-section sequences
  • Some supporting character arcs could have been developed further
  • The mythological parallels, while interesting, remain underexplored

Final Verdict: ⭐⭐⭐⭐½ — 4.5 / 5

Sugriva is a well-crafted, emotionally intelligent Telugu thriller that stands tall in a crowded release calendar. With a career-best turn from Balu Charan, confident direction from Cheranjevi Nartu, and technical departments firing on all cylinders, Sugriva is a film that deserves to be seen on the big screen.
