The HIT franchise has grown into one of India’s most intriguing cinematic universes in the thriller genre. With three gripping installments — HIT: The First Case, HIT: The Second Case, and HIT: The Third Case — director Sailesh Kolanu has masterfully crafted a layered narrative world centered around high-stakes investigations and flawed yet brilliant protagonists.

But what truly binds these three stories together? Despite different characters, crimes, and locations, there’s a strong connective tissue that holds the trilogy (and future entries) in place.

The HIT Universe: A Shared World of Crime and Justice

The most notable achievement of the HIT series is its shared universe approach — rare in Indian thrillers. At its core, HIT is about a special crime-solving unit called the Homicide Intervention Team (HIT), which operates in multiple regions and handles the most complex and disturbing cases.

Each film introduces a new protagonist who operates within or is connected to this organization, slowly expanding the scope and depth of the universe.

What Connects HIT 1, HIT 2, and HIT 3?

Let’s break down the common threads across the trilogy:

1. Investigative Crime-Solving at the Core

At the heart of all three films is a murder investigation led by a psychologically complex police officer. These aren’t just whodunits — they delve deep into:

  • Criminal psychology
  • Forensic science
  • Social commentary
  • Personal trauma of the investigators

From a missing girl in HIT 1 to a gruesome serial killer in HIT 2, and a series of politically charged murders in HIT 3, the storytelling remains rooted in intense procedural realism.

2. A Shared Universe Through the HIT Organization

The HIT organization is the glue that binds these stories. Though each film takes place in a different state and features different characters, they all function under the HIT umbrella — a fictional elite crime unit designed to crack unsolvable cases.

This setup allows for:

  • Cross-referencing past cases
  • Character mentions across films
  • Seamless integration of future crossovers

By HIT 3, it’s clear that the universe is expanding with intent — hinting at long-term narrative arcs and possibly even an ensemble team-up in future installments.

3. Distinct but Thematically Linked Protagonists

Each HIT film introduces a new lead:

  • Vikram Rudraraju (Vishwak Sen) in HIT 1 – an officer battling PTSD while solving a kidnapping case in Visakhapatnam.
  • Krishna Dev (KD) (Adivi Sesh) in HIT 2 – a sharp, witty cop who tracks a brutal serial killer in Andhra Pradesh.
  • Arjun Sarkaar (Nani) in HIT 3 – a fierce and haunted SP investigating a politically motivated murder in Rajasthan and the Northeast.

Though different in style and personality, each protagonist represents a facet of trauma, justice, and obsession — tying them thematically across films.

4. Expanding Geographic Scope

Each installment shifts the narrative to a new region, broadening the universe both culturally and visually:

  • HIT 1 – Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh
  • HIT 2 – Shifting across Andhra Pradesh and surrounding regions
  • HIT 3 – Jaipur, Arwal (Bihar), and Arunachal Pradesh

This geographic variety gives the franchise national appeal and reflects the widespread network of the HIT agency.

5. Evolution in Tone and Style

While the central genre remains crime thriller, each film has a unique tone:

  • HIT 1 – Grim and psychological, focused on trauma and suspense.
  • HIT 2 – Stylish and confident, with smart humor and a layered antagonist.
  • HIT 3 – Action-heavy and intense, with political overtones and violent confrontations.

This tonal variety prevents fatigue and allows each entry to stand on its own while still serving the larger narrative.

6. Foreshadowing and Future Connections

HIT 3 is the most self-aware of the three, clearly hinting at future storylines. The end of the film teases:

  • The possible return of characters from previous films
  • Arjun Sarkaar’s deeper involvement in a larger conspiracy
  • A lead-in to HIT 4, which is now in development

This strategy of leaving narrative breadcrumbs ensures that fans remain invested not just in one film, but in the long-term journey of the HIT universe.

A Universe Built on Mystery and Meaning

The HIT franchise isn’t just a collection of crime thrillers — it’s a carefully constructed universe that explores the intersection of justice, trauma, and truth. With each installment, director Sailesh Kolanu isn’t just solving crimes — he’s building a multi-layered world that could rival global cinematic universes in scope and ambition.

As fans eagerly await HIT 4, one thing is certain: the HIT universe is here to stay, and its web of connections is only just beginning.
