Martial arts is more than just a sport; it’s a way of life that instills discipline, confidence, and resilience in children. We recently had the opportunity to interview Sensei Schilke, the Owner and Chief Instructor at The Abbotts Bridge Dojo in Johns Creek, Georgia. With a background in geology, Sensei Schilke’s passion for karate led him to change career paths, and he has been teaching since 2006. He joined the dojo in 2007 and took over as owner in 2014. With 18 years of teaching experience and a 3rd-degree black belt, he has helped shape the lives of countless students through Karate. In this interview, he shares insights into the benefits of martial arts for children, character development, and the long-term impact of training.

Introduction and Experience:

Could you briefly introduce yourself and share your years of experience in teaching martial arts?

I’m Seth Schilke, the Owner and Chief Instructor at The Abbotts Bridge Dojo, located at the corner of Jones Bridge Road and Abbotts Bridge Road in Johns Creek, Georgia. I’ve had the privilege of teaching Karate at The Abbotts Bridge Dojo for the past eighteen years.

Importance of Martial Arts for Kids:

Why do you believe every child should train in martial arts, and what specific benefits does Karate offer?

Martial arts training at The Dojo offers benefits for everyone, but it’s especially impactful for children. We believe it helps shape character and encourages personal growth, allowing students to become the best version of themselves. At The Abbotts Bridge Dojo, we focus on adding value to our students’ lives and building a stronger future for them. The core of our program is the development of life skills, such as self-control, discipline, and the ability to make sound decisions. The choices children make now form the foundation for their future success, and martial arts is a great tool to help them develop the right mindset.

Physical and Mental Benefits:

How does Karate contribute to the physical fitness and mental well-being of children?

Karate provides both physical and mental benefits that contribute to overall well-being. At The Abbotts Bridge Dojo, we teach students exercises they can practice daily to stay “Black Belt strong.” Karate techniques, including stances and movements, are designed to build strength and enhance physical fitness. This physical development leads to greater confidence, pride, and self-esteem. When students have strong self-esteem, they tend to make better decisions, which ultimately supports their mental well-being.

Character Development:

How does Karate help in developing character traits such as discipline, respect, and perseverance in kids?

Karate at The Abbotts Bridge Dojo focuses heavily on teaching life skills and character traits such as discipline, respect, and perseverance. These are incorporated into every class through our “mat chats,” where we discuss these values directly with students. During the class, we also emphasize how these traits show up in practice—discipline to perfect techniques, respect for oneself and others, and perseverance through challenges. Struggles are framed as opportunities for personal growth, which is an essential mindset for developing strong character.

Long-Term Impact:

What is the long-term impact of martial arts training on a child’s life, beyond their childhood years?

The benefits of martial arts training extend far beyond childhood. I’ve had the privilege of teaching students who started as young as elementary school and continued training through middle school, high school, college, and even into their careers. Many of these students, along with their parents, reach out to share how martial arts has positively impacted their lives. The long-term effect is a life committed to daily growth, perseverance, and balance—where each obstacle becomes a steppingstone toward greater achievement and fulfillment.

College Admissions:

Does participating in martial arts, particularly achieving a black belt, have any benefits when it comes to college admissions?

Yes, long-term participation in martial arts, especially earning a Black Belt, can positively impact college admissions. Colleges are looking for students who are committed, responsible, and capable of balancing multiple priorities. A long-term commitment to martial arts demonstrates these qualities, as well as perseverance and the ability to follow through with goals—traits that colleges highly value.

Personal Experience:

Could you share any personal anecdotes or success stories of students who have benefited significantly from your training?

One success story that stands out is that of Sravya Ambadipudi, who started training with us in 2010 at the age of 10. She earned her Black Belt at 15 and has since gone on to do incredible things. A few years ago, Sravya reached out to me from Johns Hopkins University, where she was assigned to write about a mentor who had a significant impact on her life. She chose to write about me and The Dojo. I still remember when she started, and I was thrilled to reconnect and hear about her success.

Advice for Parents:

What advice would you give to parents considering enrolling their children in martial arts classes?

When considering enrolling your child in martial arts classes, the most important factor is the connection between the student and the instructor. It’s vital that your child feels comfortable and supported by their teacher, as this relationship plays a key role in their learning and growth. Choose a dojo where the instructor prioritizes both skill development and the character-building aspect of martial arts.
