Modha Rathiri, directed by debutant Raja Karuppasamy and backed by Mythri Movie Makers, brings a fresh, feel-good spin to the rural comedy genre. Set entirely over one chaotic wedding night, the film pairs newcomer Rishikanth with Anishma Anilkumar and delivers a breezy entertainer packed with village humour, warm emotions, and a genuinely likeable pair of leads. Released on 21 August 2026, Modha Rathiri is already being talked about as one of the season’s most charming small-town comedies.

Modha Rathiri is a light, funny, and surprisingly tender rural comedy about a newly married couple who slip away on their wedding night, sending the whole village into a hilarious tailspin. Rishikanth impresses in his debut with a calm, likeable screen presence, while Anishma Anilkumar brings both comic timing and emotional depth to Muthuselvi. With a colourful supporting cast, breezy pacing, and a runtime that never overstays its welcome, this is a wholesome, laughter-filled watch that earns its feel-good reputation and makes for a satisfying family entertainer.

Plot Summary

The story kicks off on a wedding night that quickly spirals into village-wide chaos. Marudhu (Rishikanth), who has gone along with the match at his family’s urging, learns from his new bride Muthuselvi (Anishma Anilkumar) that her heart belongs to someone else. Rather than create a scene, he quietly walks her out to reunite her with her love, accompanied by a philosophical samiyar played by Chetan. Meanwhile, the young man in question, played by director Raja Karuppasamy himself, is having a night of his own bad luck, battling a stubborn bike and unhelpful friends to reach her. Back in the village, an uncle played by Bagavathi Perumal stirs up drama at every turn, the men’s search for the missing couple dissolves into a raucous brawl, and the women left behind watch it all unfold with growing exasperation. It all builds to a tender moment where Muthuselvi opens up about a lifetime of being told “no,” giving the film an unexpectedly moving core beneath the comedy.

Performances

Rishikanth announces himself as a promising new leading man with his debut performance. His calm, unhurried screen presence gives Marudhu real warmth, and he anchors the film’s chaos with quiet confidence and impeccable comic timing.

Anishma Anilkumar continues to build on the goodwill she earned with Sirai and Youth, delivering a performance that moves fluidly between comic frustration and genuine emotional vulnerability. Her big monologue about a lifetime of missed chances is one of the film’s most affecting moments.

Raja Karuppasamy, doubling up as director and actor, brings an endearing, slightly bumbling energy to the lovestruck young man chasing after Muthuselvi, adding to the film’s charm both behind and in front of the camera.

Chetan is delightful as the philosophising samiyar who accompanies Marudhu through the night, bringing a gentle, offbeat humour to his scenes.

Bagavathi Perumal is a scene-stealer, gleefully leaning into his character’s short temper and turning him into the film’s biggest source of laughs.

Bucks adds his trademark comic energy to the ensemble as Saravanan Chitappa, rounding out the film’s colourful gallery of village characters.

A. Venkatesh, Abdool Lee, Shelly Kishore, Sangeetha Balan, and Banupriya all contribute solid, spirited work in the supporting cast, each adding their own flavour to the film’s lively village-night atmosphere.\
