Ten fishermen from Tamil Nadu were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy for crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line and fishing in Sri Lankan waters. The fishermen, all from the Pamban fishing harbor in Ramanathapuram district, were fishing between Dhanushkodi and Talaimannar, an area prone to maritime disputes due to its proximity to the boundary. Sri Lankan naval patrol intercepted their boat and accused them of illegal entry.
The Sri Lankan navy detained all 10 fishermen and seized their boat during the operation. The arrested fishermen, along with their vessel, were taken to a naval camp in Talaimannar for further legal proceedings. Authorities have begun interrogation, and the fishermen face legal action under Sri Lankan maritime laws. The confiscation of the boat raises concerns about the economic impact on the fishermen’s families.
The incident has caused distress among the families of the detained fishermen and the wider fishing community in Tamil Nadu. Fishermen’s associations have condemned the arrests and called for immediate intervention by the state and Union governments to secure the fishermen’s release. They have also urged for a permanent diplomatic resolution to issues in the Palk Strait, emphasizing the need for clear boundaries and protection of fishing rights.
Stakeholders are pushing for urgent bilateral discussions between India and Sri Lanka to address the humanitarian and economic aspects of the situation and prevent further tensions. The frequent arrests, boat seizures, and economic hardships imposed by Sri Lankan actions have severely impacted the livelihoods of fishermen who rely on daily catches for survival.
