The Madhya Pradesh High Court reviewed petitions from the State Government and Twisha Sharma’s father regarding the anticipatory bail granted to Giribala Singh, the deceased’s mother-in-law and a former district and sessions judge. Both petitions raised concerns about Singh’s lack of cooperation in the dowry death case investigation and the potential risk of evidence tampering if she remains on bail. The court, presided over by Justice Devanarayan Mishra, scheduled the next hearing for May 27 after directing that a copy of the complainant’s petition be provided to the respondent.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta and Advocate General Prashant Singh represented the State Government during the hearing, while Senior Advocate Siddharth Luthra appeared for the complainant. Senior Advocate Ms Nitya Ramakrishna, along with Enosh George Carlo, represented Giribala Singh. The case involves the suspicious death of Twisha Sharma at her in-laws’ residence in Bhopal’s Katara Hills on May 12, with her post-mortem conducted the following day. Giribala Singh had obtained anticipatory bail on May 14, a day after the incident.
The State Government’s petition highlights Giribala Singh’s involvement as an accused in the dowry harassment and abetment to suicide case and her alleged lack of cooperation with the Special Investigation Team. Twisha’s father has also contested the grant of anticipatory bail, urging for stricter action against all the accused. The case has garnered significant public and judicial attention, especially after the Supreme Court took suo motu cognisance of the matter. The cancellation of bail pleas is closely monitored as the second post-mortem report and other forensic evidence are expected to influence the investigation’s direction.
