In a significant move for urban ecological restoration, the 133 Eco Task Force, operating under the TA Group Headquarters Western Command, conducted a large-scale sapling plantation event at the Daddu Majra dumping ground in Chandigarh. The initiative, part of the van mahotsav celebration in collaboration with the Chandigarh administration, was inaugurated by Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria. Known for waste management challenges, the Daddu Majra site saw a massive environmental reclamation effort.
The campaign, aligned with the national van mahotsav theme “Healing the Earth through Greener Initiatives,” aimed to convert ecological blind spots into green areas for the city. The event saw significant military participation, with the 133 Eco Task Force planting around 4,000 saplings in a day at various locations, including the Chandimandir military station. The effort extended beyond defense personnel, as administration departments and students from government schools also actively took part in the plantation.
During the inauguration, Governor Kataria praised the dedication of the 133 Eco Task Force, emphasizing the importance of Territorial Army units in providing structured support for the saplings’ long-term growth. He highlighted the transformation of the Daddu Majra dumping ground into a green zone as a testament to effective planning and sustained efforts, showcasing how degraded land can be turned into valuable green spaces for future generations. Governor Kataria stressed the need for scientific plantation methods, regular monitoring, and ongoing maintenance to ensure the survival and growth of the newly planted trees.
With the monsoon season underway, the Chandigarh Forest Department and the 133 Eco Task Force have implemented monitoring plans to enhance the survival rates of the 4,000 saplings planted in the region.
