Police and school authorities in Chottanikkara, Kerala, are still searching for answers regarding the tragic suicide of a 16-year-old girl found in a quarry near her home ten days after she went missing. The incident has sparked discussions about a possible Korean link to her death, causing confusion among teachers, parents, and law enforcement.
The girl, identified as Adithya, left for school one morning but was later discovered dead in the quarry, prompting concerns about the circumstances leading to her untimely demise. Investigators are facing challenges in unraveling the case due to delays in examining crucial digital evidence and uncertainties surrounding an online account associated with the tragedy.
A suicide note recovered from the girl’s school bag revealed that Adithya took her own life after being emotionally shattered by the reported death of a Korean friend she met on Instagram. The note disclosed that she learned about her friend’s demise on January 19, causing immense distress that led to her tragic decision.
Despite the suicide note’s contents, authorities have not yet analyzed the girl’s mobile phone, raising worries among educators and the public. Suspicions have arisen regarding the authenticity of the Instagram account linked to the Korean individual, as it had a mere 12 followers, casting doubt on its legitimacy.
Teachers have expressed concerns about the potential risks of online “Korean romance” scams targeting vulnerable teenagers, where fake profiles impersonate foreign celebrities to manipulate emotions. The suicide note, written in both English and Korean, detailed Adithya’s deep sorrow over her parents and her inability to cope with the loss of her friend.
Further complicating the case, Korean writings were found in one of her books, currently undergoing translation. Adithya, a first-year student at Chottanikkara Government Vocational Higher Secondary School, was pursuing a Lab Technician course. The investigation is ongoing, with a focus on cyber and forensic aspects to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
