Over the past two years, 2.30 lakh trees have been planted in Sabarkantha district as part of the ‘Green Wall of Aravalli’ initiative, as revealed by State Minister for Forests and Environment, Pravin Mali. Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2025, the project aims to create a green corridor along the Aravalli mountain range, spanning from Gujarat to Delhi.
Minister Mali, in response to queries, highlighted the high survival rate of the planted trees. To ensure rapid growth, the Forest Department plans to provide saplings ranging from six to 10 feet to tree enthusiasts, eliminating the need to source them from private nurseries. The department will oversee the maintenance of these trees for a decade.
As a tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s 150th birth anniversary, the Forest Department is establishing memorial forests with 562 trees in each legislative assembly constituency, symbolizing Patel’s efforts in unifying 562 princely states. Notably, memorial forests have already been established in Idar, Khedbrahma, Prantij, and Himmatnagar.
Updating on the Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority (CAMPA) scheme, Minister Mali reported the planting of 14 lakh saplings across 1,508 hectares in Sabarkantha district in the past year, with an additional 4.55 lakh saplings covering 454 hectares in Khedbrahma.
The ‘Green Wall of Aravalli’ project, a significant ecological restoration initiative, targets combating land degradation and desertification along the Aravalli mountain range spanning Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana, and Delhi. The initiative seeks to establish a five-kilometre-wide green belt by planting indigenous tree species, rejuvenating water bodies, and promoting agroforestry and pasture development.
