A 21-year-old student, Maheshwari Khachar, participating in a National Service Scheme (NSS) camp at Gujarat University was discovered deceased in a university guest house. Khachar, a third-year student at L D Arts College from Botad living in Ahmedabad’s Ranip area, had been an active NSS volunteer and was recently promoted for her contributions.

Khachar, who was scheduled to receive visitors from Kolkata for an NSS-related event, left the campus around 3.30 pm and did not return. She was found hanging near a window in her room by another student sent to check on her. Despite prompt arrival of emergency services, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities have initiated an investigation into the incident, with a case of accidental death registered by the police. A Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team has collected evidence from the guest house, while her personal belongings and mobile phone are being examined to ascertain the cause of death.

Police are gathering statements from students, faculty, and family members, with university authorities providing counseling for affected students. The NSS camp, aimed at promoting social service and national unity, has seen condolences extended to Khachar’s family by university officials and NSS coordinators.
