Tushar Kumar, a 23-year-old councillor, has made history as the youngest Indian-origin mayor in the United Kingdom. He was appointed as the mayor of Elstree and Borehamwood, coming from Haryana. The Mayor-Making Ceremony at Fairway Hall in Borehamwood on May 13 marked his official appointment.
Kumar, who studied political science at King’s College London, expressed his gratitude on social media for the honor. He emphasized the significance of his young age in assuming the mayoral role, hoping to inspire more youth to engage in local democracy and community service.
During his acceptance speech, Kumar acknowledged the support of outgoing Mayor Councillor Dan Ozarow and congratulated Councillor Linda Smith on her new role as Deputy Mayor. He highlighted his vision of being an accessible mayor actively involved with residents and local organizations in Elstree and Borehamwood.
Mayor Kumar’s appointment has drawn attention due to his age, making him the youngest serving mayor in the UK. This event underscores the growing participation of the younger generation in local governance and civic activities.
