The government has given the green light to the Arakkonam-Chengalpattu Doubling Project of Southern Railway in Tamil Nadu, costing Rs 993 crore. This initiative aims to enhance suburban and freight connectivity in the region. The project spans 68 km and is a crucial part of the Chennai suburban circular rail network linking Chennai Beach, Tambaram, Chengalpattu, and Arakkonam.
Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized that the Arakkonam-Chengalpattu Doubling Project will alleviate congestion on the bustling Chennai suburban rail network. It is expected to boost punctuality and operational efficiency significantly. Additionally, the project will bolster both passenger and freight movement, facilitating the transportation of various commodities like cement, automobiles, food grains, iron, and steel.
The existing double-line section is currently operating at a high capacity level, with an anticipated increase in traffic volume in the future. This necessitates additional infrastructure development to meet the rising demand. The doubling work is projected to reduce train detention time, enhance punctuality, and increase the frequency of suburban rail services, benefiting commuters and businesses alike.
The Arakkonam-Chengalpattu rail route serves as a vital link to major economic and industrial centers such as Mahindra World City, Sriperumbudur, Oragadam, and Irungattukottai. It caters to significant automobile, cement, and manufacturing industries in the region. Moreover, the proximity of the proposed Parandur Airport project near Kancheepuram to the alignment further underscores the strategic importance of this route.
This project signifies a significant stride in the modernization of Indian Railways’ infrastructure, aiming to enhance network capacity and operational efficiency along critical corridors. It is expected to bolster regional industrial growth and provide faster, safer, and more reliable transportation services to the populace.
