A total of 263 individuals were apprehended, and approximately 1,301 cases were registered for traffic infractions in Kolkata during the New Year festivities, as confirmed by the police. To uphold law and order on New Year’s Eve, an extensive operation was carried out citywide, resulting in the arrest of 263 individuals for various transgressions. The police also seized a significant amount of prohibited items, including nearly four kg of illegal firecrackers and 16.95 liters of illicit liquor.
Traffic management was a key focus for Kolkata Police during the New Year celebrations. Stringent traffic checks were conducted throughout the night to avert accidents and ensure public safety. Several drivers faced legal action for breaching traffic regulations while operating cars and motorcycles. Data from Kolkata Traffic Police revealed a total of 1,301 instances of traffic violations on New Year’s Eve, with the highest number of cases related to triple riding at 235.
Enforcement actions were taken against 480 individuals for riding motorcycles without helmets, and 178 cases were filed for reckless driving in Kolkata. Furthermore, close to 149 individuals were apprehended for driving under the influence of alcohol, with an additional 259 cases registered for various other traffic offenses. The vigilant surveillance and operational efforts by Kolkata Police helped avert major incidents during the New Year celebrations, with the cooperation of the public playing a crucial role in maintaining law and order and traffic control.
It has been announced that stringent measures will be sustained in the future to ensure the safety of the city’s residents, particularly with upcoming events such as the Gangasagar Mela camps, Republic Day celebrations, and the International Kolkata Book Fair.
