After a violent attack in Manipur on May 13, where three Baptist Church pastors lost their lives and four others were injured, 28 individuals from various communities have been safely released. Following the attack, civilians were detained near Leilon Vaiphei and Saparmeina villages in Kangpokpi and Senapati districts. Armed groups ambushed vehicles in Kangpokpi district, resulting in the deaths of three church leaders and injuries to four others.
Efforts by security forces, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), and community leaders led to the successful release of the detained individuals. A joint operation involving public leaders, CSOs, and security forces helped in tracing and securing the release of the hostages. Among the released individuals were 14 Naga community members detained by Kuki groups and 14 Kuki villagers detained by Naga groups.
A total of 38 people from Kuki and Naga communities were held hostage by armed groups in Manipur’s Kangpokpi and Senapati districts post the May 13 incident. The areas are predominantly inhabited by Kuki-Zo and Naga communities. Efforts are ongoing to ensure the safe release of the remaining detained individuals. Authorities have urged the public to assist in maintaining peace and ensuring the safe release of all civilians.
