Personal information of over 30 million Coupang customers may have been exposed, as per a senior police official on Monday. There is a chance that the company’s acting CEO, Harold Rogers, who has ignored two police summons, might face detention. Park Jeong-bo, head of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, contradicted Coupang’s claim that only 3,000 cases were affected by the data breach.
The police are uncertain about the exact amount of leaked data but suspect that data from more than 30 million accounts has been compromised. Coupang had previously reported that a former Chinese employee stole personal details from 33 million users but retained data from only 3,000 individuals. Authorities are looking into whether Coupang downplayed the extent of the breach.
Rogers has been summoned twice by the police, on Jan. 5 and 14, but he did not appear on both occasions. A third summons has been issued to him, with a pending date. The police are considering the option of seeking an arrest warrant for Rogers if he continues to evade the summons. Park mentioned that standard procedures will be followed, and an arrest warrant may be requested if specific conditions are met, typically after three or more ignored summonses.
