A total of 44 inmates from various prisons in Gujarat have passed the Class 10 and Class 12 exams conducted by the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSEB). This achievement highlights the success of educational rehabilitation efforts in the state’s correctional system. The results include 22 inmates each who cleared the Class 10 and Class 12 exams.
Efforts to provide educational opportunities to prisoners have been ongoing, with structured academic support, counseling, and access to learning resources within jail premises. The Gujarat Prisons and Correctional Administration played a key role in facilitating the exam process by assisting inmates with applications, providing study materials, and organizing subject-wise classes in prisons.
Inmates were able to appear for the board exams in a controlled environment within jail premises as examination centers were set up there. The successful inmates will be honored with certificates by the Prison Department, according to Director General of Police (DGP) K.L.N. Rao. The administration is also focusing on supporting the children of prison inmates as part of broader welfare measures.
Efforts to expand educational access and rehabilitation programs in prisons have received support from the state’s Home Department under Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi. Regular academic sessions are conducted with the help of teachers and subject experts visiting correctional facilities to guide students preparing for board exams. Additionally, libraries with books and audio learning materials have been introduced in prisons to help inmates develop study habits and positive coping mechanisms.
Radio Prison broadcasts and counseling sessions are part of the ongoing welfare activities to assist inmates facing emotional or psychological challenges. Education has been a significant turning point for many inmates during their time in prison, with some expressing gratitude for the motivation and support received. Vocational and creative programs like music classes and skill development sessions are being introduced in select prisons to help inmates cultivate constructive interests alongside their academic pursuits.
