Around 9 crore micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) are registered under the government’s Udyam Registration Portal and Udyam Assist Platform, collectively employing over 38 crore individuals nationwide. These digital platforms aim to formalize businesses, enhance access to government assistance, and fortify the MSME sector, as per the Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises. Udyam Registration offers MSMEs an official identity through a simple, paperless, and cost-free online registration process.
The Udyam Assist initiative complements this by assisting informal micro-enterprises, including those not under the GST or Income Tax systems, in obtaining formal recognition through authorized partners like banks and non-banking financial companies. Eligible enterprises can acquire a ‘Udyam Assist Certificate’ through this platform, making them eligible for various government schemes supporting micro-enterprises. Registered MSMEs gain access to government programs related to finance, technology upgrades, quality certification, skill development, market entry, and entrepreneurship promotion.
Furthermore, registered enterprises can benefit from improved access to institutional credit, safeguards against delayed payments, participation in government tenders, and assistance for quality enhancement, digitalization, and productivity improvement. These initiatives are also aiding in expanding financial inclusion by integrating more informal businesses into the formal economy, particularly supporting women entrepreneurs, SC/ST entrepreneurs, rural enterprises, traditional artisans, first-generation entrepreneurs, and youth-led startups. The combined impact of the Udyam Registration Portal and Udyam Assist Platform is reinforcing entrepreneurship, formalizing MSMEs, and contributing to the nation’s long-term economic development goals.
