Shiv Sena-UBT leader Aaditya Thackeray has called on the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to immediately stop private construction activities in Mumbai for a week. Thackeray expressed worries about the deteriorating air quality in the city, describing Mumbai as being covered in heavy smog.
In a letter to Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani, Thackeray highlighted the environmental degradation and ongoing urban projects, emphasizing the need for urgent actions to safeguard public health. He emphasized that Mumbai has been facing high pollution levels recently, cautioning that this could harm the city’s image as an investment and tourism hub.
Thackeray demanded a seven-day pause on private construction citywide and suggested creating a construction schedule based on real-time air quality data to reduce environmental harm. He also criticized BMC’s alleged plan to cut down 45,000 mangroves, pointing out a conflict between environmental promises and development choices.
