Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha member Raghav Chadha expressed worries in Parliament about deceptive branding in India’s consumer market, particularly focusing on packaged fruit drinks. Chadha highlighted that many consumers, especially youth, are being misled into thinking they are consuming healthy beverages when, in reality, they are consuming sugary products disguised as fruit juices. This misleading marketing, according to Chadha, is contributing to an increase in lifestyle-related diseases like diabetes and obesity.
Chadha questioned the government about the actions being taken to prevent misleading visuals in advertisements and ensure clear labeling for products high in sugar content. He emphasized the need for distinct categorization of beverages to differentiate between real fruit juices and those made from sugar, concentrates, and preservatives. The AAP leader also pointed out deceptive packaging practices where products feature appealing fruit images on the front but carry disclaimers like “pictures for marketing purposes only” in small print on the back.
Highlighting concerns about major food brands misleading consumers through visual tactics, Chadha stressed the importance of stricter regulations and transparent food labeling. He called for decisive government intervention to safeguard consumers and ensure that branding and advertising practices are honest, transparent, and not misleading.
