After a period of seclusion following the West Bengal Assembly election results, Abhishek Banerjee, Trinamool Congress’ general secretary and Lok Sabha member, will restart his public political engagements starting Saturday. He will be meeting party workers who were reportedly victims of post-poll violence. Banerjee, a three-time Lok Sabha member from Diamond Harbour constituency, has two scheduled programs for this purpose.
One of the planned meetings is with Sanju Karmakar, a party worker from Sonarpur-Dakshin Assembly constituency in South 24 Parganas district, who was a victim of post-poll violence. The second meeting will be with Biswajit Pattanayak from Beleghata Assembly constituency in North Kolkata, who also faced similar violence. These interactions aim to address the challenges faced by party activists post-election.
Since the election outcome on May 4, Abhishek Banerjee has experienced significant changes in his security arrangements. The state government has replaced his previous high-profile security with standard protection entitled to a Lok Sabha member. Additionally, Kolkata Municipal Corporation has issued notices for scrutiny of 17 properties linked to Banerjee to verify compliance with building regulations.
An FIR has been lodged against Banerjee for alleged provocative remarks made during an election rally. While the Calcutta High Court granted him interim protection from coercive actions till July, restrictions on his foreign travels have been imposed. These legal developments have altered Banerjee’s public engagements and security protocols.
