Trinamool Congress general secretary and Lok Sabha member Abhishek Banerjee stated that he is willing to cooperate with the West Bengal Police’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) if called for questioning. A team of CID officials visited his residence in South Kolkata to serve him a notice regarding a case where he was accused of inciting violence and threatening Union Home Minister Amit Shah before the state assembly polls.
Banerjee, who is also the nephew of former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, was not present at home when the CID officials arrived. After a delay of nearly two and a half hours, he arrived and addressed the media, mentioning his recent cooperation with the CID in a separate case.
Having faced over 5.5 hours of questioning at the CID office previously, Banerjee assured his willingness to appear for further interrogation on June 14. Despite having missed three earlier summons, he complied following a court deadline. He explained his absence during the CID visit, citing a meeting with Mamata Banerjee as the reason for the delay.
Banerjee’s avoidance of the CID notice delivery and subsequent delay were clarified as being due to a prior engagement. The CID officers eventually left after handing over the notice, summoning Banerjee to appear for interrogation on June 16 in connection with the alleged incidents before the state elections. An FIR against Banerjee had been filed at the Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police Station, with the CID taking over the investigation recently.
