An accountant working with the Local Area Engineering Organisation (LAEO) in Bihar’s Khagaria district was apprehended while taking a bribe of Rs 18,000. The Special Vigilance Unit (SVU) detained the accused, identified as Shishir Rai, as part of the state’s anti-corruption efforts. The complainant alleged that the accountant had demanded illicit payments from a beneficiary in return for official services.
Following a formal complaint, the Vigilance Department investigated the accusations and set up a sting operation. Acting on the plan, the vigilance team caught Shishir Rai red-handed accepting the bribe. Subsequently, the accused was taken to the LAEO office for interrogation. Officials are reviewing office documents to determine if others are involved in the case.
The incident has caused a commotion within government departments in the district. Vigilance officials emphasized that the anti-corruption campaign will persist, with severe measures against any wrongdoers. Earlier, on January 5, the SVU arrested another official, Ramkrit Mahto, a revenue employee in Sheohar, for soliciting a bribe of Rs 10,000 for land record mutation. The SVU acted on confidential information, verified the complaint, and then apprehended the revenue officer.
On January 2, the Vigilance Department also apprehended a Sub-Inspector at Akbarpur police station in Nawada district for accepting a bribe of Rs 25,000. The case stemmed from a complaint by Vikas Kumar, a Nawada resident, leading to the arrest of the officer.
