In the 2024 Garden Reach building collapse case in Kolkata, which resulted in 13 fatalities and numerous injuries, it has been revealed that the main suspect has fled to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The prime accused, Mohammad Shahnawaz, is said to be hiding in the UAE, concealing his identity, as per police sources. The building that collapsed in the Garden Reach area in 2024 was constructed on his property. Kolkata Police Headquarters has located Mohammad Shahnawaz and informed the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. Efforts are underway to repatriate the accused back to India, with a Yellow Corner Notice issued against him through Interpol. The collapse occurred on March 17, 2024, claiming 13 lives and leading to a case being filed against Shahnawaz and others. The Calcutta High Court sought a report on the state government’s involvement, while the KMC initiated an independent investigation. Shahnawaz had been evading authorities post-incident, hiding in various locations in Kolkata before fleeing to the UAE, where he is believed to be residing under an assumed identity. The police filed a comprehensive charge sheet 88 days after the collapse, charging Shahnawaz and others with offenses like murder and conspiracy.
