Actor Parambrata Chatterjee has approached the Calcutta High Court’s vacation bench to request the cancellation of an FIR lodged against him at Gariahat Police Station. The FIR accused him of making a provocative social media statement and inciting post-election violence in the aftermath of the 2021 West Bengal Assembly polls.
The petition filed by Chatterjee has been accepted, and the case is scheduled for a hearing on May 29 before Justice Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee of the Calcutta High Court. The FIR stemmed from a complaint by advocate Joydeep Sen, leading to a similar case against actress Swastika Mukherjee, daughter of the late Santu Mukherjee, for allegedly supporting the contentious social media post.
While Swastika Mukherjee cooperated with the police inquiry by appearing at the Gariahat Police Station on May 23, Chatterjee opted to seek relief from the High Court to quash the FIR against him. Notably, BJP MLA and actor Rudranil Ghosh convened a meeting at Technicians Studio, attended by Parambrata Chatterjee, where the actor disclosed the pressure he faced to support the previous Trinamool Congress government.
