With the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections approaching, actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay is gearing up to boost his campaign in the central region. Tomorrow, in Tiruchy, he has been granted conditional permission by the police for a roadshow and a meeting with party members. The police have imposed 27 strict restrictions focusing on crowd control, traffic management, and public safety.
Vijay is scheduled to kick off a two-kilometre roadshow from the airport, with organizers instructed to follow designated routes, prevent overcrowding, and keep emergency lanes clear. The restrictions also cover aspects like the number of vehicles in convoys, use of public address systems, and the presence of volunteers for crowd management.
Following the roadshow, Vijay will engage with party cadres and conduct a meeting with functionaries to provide crucial election-related directives. Subsequently, he will head to the neighboring Pudukottai district for three campaign meetings as part of his statewide outreach.
The campaign intensification is pivotal for the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), founded by Vijay in 2024, focusing on clean governance, youth-oriented policies, and an alternative to the existing Dravidian political structure. Despite gaining significant support, especially among first-time voters and urban youth, the party has faced challenges. A tragic stampede during a TVK event in Karur in September 2025, resulting in 41 fatalities, raised concerns about crowd management practices and drew criticism.
In response to such incidents, authorities have tightened regulations on political gatherings with large crowds. The upcoming Tiruchy event is under close police scrutiny, with additional personnel deployed to prevent any untoward situations. Senior officers emphasize the importance of enabling democratic campaigning while upholding public safety standards.
