Actress and filmmaker Pallavi Joshi expressed concerns about how the introduction of daily soaps transformed Indian television, shifting its focus to high-volume production schedules at the expense of creativity. She highlighted the immense pressure faced by writers and creators due to the transition from weekly to daily programming, leading to a decline in content quality.
Pallavi emphasized that the television industry, accustomed to producing weekly episodes, now had to deliver content almost daily, resulting in a demanding shooting schedule. This shift meant shooting multiple episodes in a single day, significantly impacting the creative process and quality of storytelling.
According to Pallavi, the rigorous production demands also negatively affected writers, leading to challenges like writer’s block and repetitive storytelling. She noted that the pressure to constantly churn out content eventually led to a saturation of tried and tested formulas in television programming.
Reflecting on the success of iconic shows like “Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi,” Pallavi acknowledged that while such series initially offered fresh content, the subsequent influx of similar programming led to a decline in the portrayal of women on television. She highlighted how the changing dynamics behind the scenes influenced the representation of women and the overall content narrative.
Pallavi further commented on the evolving entertainment landscape, mentioning that even OTT platforms are facing similar challenges as traditional television. She expressed uncertainty about the current direction of OTT content, indicating a need for reevaluation and innovation in the industry.
