The Ahmedabad Central Jail recently held a felicitation ceremony as part of the Gujarat government’s ‘Vikasdeep’ scheme to recognize the academic achievements of inmates’ children. The event aimed to inspire these children to pursue education and establish successful careers despite facing challenges due to their family members’ incarceration.
During the ceremony, Gujarat’s Director General of Police, K.L.N. Rao, awarded cash prizes and certificates to two young men who excelled in competitive exams. One recipient, the son of an inmate at the Ahmedabad Central Jail, secured a position as an Unarmed Police Constable after completing the Gujarat Police Recruitment Board process. The other awardee, the son of a released convict, cleared the Gujarat Subordinate Service Selection Board exam and is now a Junior Clerk in the Gujarat Food and Civil Supplies Department.
Both awardees received a cash prize of Rs 15,001 each, along with mementos and certificates, as part of the ‘Vikasdeep’ scheme. The ceremony, overseen by Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi and state DGP Rao, highlighted the importance of education and rehabilitation within the prison system.
Officials emphasized that the initiative is part of broader efforts by the state prison department to support inmates and their families, especially children pursuing education. The event also showcased past incentives provided under similar welfare schemes, including cash rewards for inmates and their children who excelled in academic examinations.
