The Ahmedabad Civil Hospital marked its 248th organ donation as the family of a 53-year-old brain-dead man from Bapunagar agreed to donate his organs. Virendra Gohadiya, who suffered a brain stroke due to high blood pressure, was treated at the hospital after being declared brain-dead on July 16.
Dr. Abhishek Barot’s organ donation team at the hospital counseled Virendra’s family on the significance of organ donation following his brain death. Despite the tragic loss, Virendra’s wife Anita consented to donate his liver and two kidneys, benefiting three patients awaiting transplants.
The donated organs will be transplanted into patients receiving treatment at the Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre (IKDRC) on the Civil Medicity campus. Dr. Rakesh Joshi, the Civil Hospital Superintendent, commended the family’s decision, emphasizing that this act would save three lives and contribute to the hospital’s total of 248 organ donations.
Dr. Joshi highlighted that the hospital has received a total of 821 organs from 248 donors, including 245 tissue donations. The hospital’s organ donation team, operating under the “Angdaan Mahadaan” campaign, continues to promote cadaver organ donation tirelessly, aiming to raise awareness and encourage more individuals to donate organs.
