Ahmedabad’s food safety authorities recently inspected over 1,000 food businesses in the first half of June. Out of 409 samples collected, 27 failed to meet quality and safety standards. One sample, a Kalakhatta sharbat (ice gola), was deemed unsafe for consumption.
The inspections, conducted by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s Food Department, covered various wards and zones of the city. The samples collected included a wide range of food products such as cold beverages, milk products, sweets, bakery items, spices, and more. Results showed that 26 samples were substandard, leading to actions against the respective food operators.
Authorities issued 307 notices during the inspections and performed 198 Total Plate Count (TPC) tests. Additionally, around 2,089 kilograms and 665 liters of unhygienic or unfit food products were destroyed. Administrative charges totaling Rs 5.13 lakh were recovered, and three food establishments were sealed for various violations.
Inspections focusing on hygiene, licensing, and registration requirements will continue in Ahmedabad. Strict actions will be taken against businesses operating without licenses or failing to comply with food safety regulations.
