As Ahmedabad prepares for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, leaders from Gujarat and the UK discussed economic, infrastructural, and diplomatic priorities at the ‘Commonwealth Connect Forum’. The event, held at the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex, aimed to foster cooperation in areas such as infrastructure, sports economy, education, and investment.
Ahmedabad Mayor Pratibha Jain emphasized the city’s growing international engagement in anticipation of the 2030 Games. She expressed pride in Ahmedabad being chosen as the host city following the General Assembly in Glasgow last year.
The delegation led by West Midlands Mayor Richard Parker was welcomed by Mayor Jain, highlighting the city’s progress in sports and modern infrastructure under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi, Union Minister Amit Shah, and CM Bhupendra Patel. The success of hosting the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup final at the Narendra Modi Stadium showcased Ahmedabad’s global capabilities.
Municipal Commissioner Banchhanidhi Pani described Ahmedabad as a blend of historical legacy and modern development, noting its recognition as the cleanest city in India and achievements in climate-resilient initiatives. He highlighted the city’s planned development area and allocated budget for climate-resilient projects.
Preparations for the 2030 Games in Ahmedabad will focus on smart mobility, sustainable infrastructure, stadium technology, digital governance, and legacy planning to enhance UK-India cooperation. Richard Parker praised the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games for its economic impact and emphasized the importance of legacy building in community confidence.
Manoj Ladwa, Chairman and CEO of the India Global Forum, underlined Gujarat’s role in India’s national rise through sports. He emphasized the state’s economic contribution to India’s GDP and exports, calling for structured economic gains from the global visibility of the 2030 Games.
Thematic sessions at the forum covered sports diplomacy, infrastructure, financing, investment, and legacy building, with participation from UK and Indian business leaders, vice-chancellors, and sports representatives.
