The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) conducted a demolition drive in Motera Koteshwar village to remove unauthorized constructions on municipal land, following orders from the Gujarat High Court. The operation focused on structures identified as illegal encroachments near Asaram Ashram, with the AMC ensuring compliance with court directives.
A significant police presence was deployed to maintain order during the demolition process. Around 125 to 150 personnel, including senior officers, were stationed in the area as demolition teams, equipped with heavy machinery, worked on removing 37 unauthorized houses. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Bharat Rathod emphasized that the police presence aimed to prevent any disruptions during the operation.
Residents gathered as the demolition teams, accompanied by police, entered the area. Some residents protested and displayed property documents, while authorities announced through loudspeakers that occupants should vacate the premises within 30 minutes. Demolition work commenced after the deadline, with JCB machines operating under police protection to ensure a smooth process.
Tensions escalated at certain points during the operation, leading to minor scuffles between residents and municipal personnel. Police intervention was necessary to maintain order. Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Vani Dudhate highlighted that the land in question belonged to the AMC and had been at the center of a prolonged legal dispute, necessitating police assistance to execute the demolition.
AMC officials clarified that the demolition targeted constructions that exceeded approved limits and were deemed illegal. The civic body had offered affected residents alternative accommodation and rental assistance before the drive, but these proposals were not accepted. Further actions, as required, will be taken in line with the Gujarat High Court’s instructions.
