The Ahmedabad Police and Crime Branch have detained over 290 suspects and officially identified 131 Bangladeshi nationals residing illegally in areas like Chandola and Gulabnagar during a late-night sweep. This crackdown targeted suspected Bangladeshi infiltrators across various areas, including Chandola, Gulabnagar, and Khodiyarnagar of Ahmedabad. The suspects are being interrogated at the Crime Branch, where officials are verifying their identification and residency documents.
A total of 131 individuals have been apprehended and confirmed to be Bangladeshis, with an additional 160 suspects undergoing intense interrogation at the Crime Branch. The numbers are expected to increase as per officials. Last year, Gujarat Police and Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation conducted crackdowns against undocumented immigrants and illegal settlements in Ahmedabad, detaining over 6,500 people suspected of being illegal Bangladeshi immigrants.
Authorities used heavy machinery to demolish thousands of illegally constructed homes and structures around Chandola Lake, a protected water body, after the detentions. The illegal residents were deported following documentation. India has intensified anti-infiltration measures, with the Central government targeting and removing undocumented individuals citing national security threats. In West Bengal, land is being handed over to the BSF for barbed-wire fencing along the Indo-Bangladesh border post BJP’s victory in the Assembly elections.
