Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing policing by shifting from reactive to preventive measures, enhancing emergency response times and crime prevention. At the 29th National Conference on e-Governance in Jaipur, experts discussed the significant impact of AI on law enforcement. Gopesh Agrawal, from the Bureau of Police Research and Development, highlighted the increasing adoption of AI technologies by police forces across India.
AI is playing a crucial role in transforming policing strategies to focus on preventing crimes before they occur, leading to a decrease in crime rates and faster emergency responses. Agrawal emphasized that AI should be viewed as a tool to augment police capabilities, not replace human personnel. Amandeep Kapoor, Director at BPR&D (Jaipur), emphasized the importance of implementing strong safeguards to prevent AI misuse.
The discussion also covered the need for developing sovereign and responsible AI technologies in India to ensure secure implementation in law enforcement. Emerging technologies like blockchain, data computing, and AI-powered tools were identified as key components for modern policing. Panelists stressed the importance of AI literacy among police personnel for effective adoption of investigative tools and technologies.
Kommi Kishore, Superintendent of Police from Eluru, highlighted the benefits of AI-powered investigative tools in improving conviction rates. He cautioned against rapid and unregulated AI deployment, emphasizing the importance of a balanced approach to avoid risks like algorithmic bias in investigations. Experts concluded that the objective of AI in policing should be proactive rather than merely predictive.
Salman Taj, Director at the Central Detective Training Institute in Hyderabad, discussed the challenges posed by scattered policing data and advocated for the establishment of Data Fusion Centres for integrated information management. He underscored the significance of AI data sovereignty for responsible use in law enforcement. The session concluded with a discussion on AI-driven policing and its role in enhancing public safety.
