The AIADMK suffered a significant setback in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, securing only 47 seats and slipping to third place. This defeat not only led to Edappadi K. Palaniswami losing the Leader of Opposition post but also sparked internal discussions and factional activities within the party. The election results, announced on May 4, have raised concerns about the party’s future direction and leadership structure.
AIADMK MLAs were recently housed in a private hotel in Puducherry, while senior leader C.V. Shanmugam engaged in closed-door consultations with legislators and district secretaries. Reports suggest growing differences between EPS and Shanmugam, with separate meetings held by each leader for MLAs. The intense consultations continued for two days, with speculations rife about internal realignments within the party.
Amidst the uncertainty, former MLA Manimekalai publicly supported EPS, emphasizing his leadership capabilities. She dismissed calls for EPS’s resignation as general secretary, citing his significant victory margin in the elections. Manimekalai expressed confidence in the party’s ability to analyze the electoral defeat and restore the iconic “Two Leaves” symbol soon.
