With the deadline approaching for the 25 AIADMK MLAs who defied the party whip during a trust vote, signs suggest a possible reconciliation between the factions to avoid further political and legal issues. The rebellion caused an internal crisis when the MLAs supported a different government despite party directives. Observers noted that failure to condone their actions within 15 days could lead to disqualification under anti-defection laws.
Sources close to AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami mentioned a potential reconciliation process involving the rebel MLAs expressing regret and seeking withdrawal of disqualification proceedings. Several MLAs from the opposing camp have shown willingness to rejoin the mainstream leadership, with discussions expected in the upcoming days as they meet with voters in their constituencies.
Pressing forward with disqualification proceedings could benefit the ruling TVK government by reducing the Assembly’s effective strength and lowering the majority mark needed for survival. Meanwhile, the TVK government stated that there is no fixed deadline for the Speaker to decide on disqualification petitions, allowing time for legal review and political developments. Reconciliation measures being considered include reinstating removed district secretaries and withdrawing petitions filed with the Speaker and Election Commission.
Senior AIADMK leader S.P. Velumani emphasized party unity, confirming Edappadi K. Palaniswami as the General Secretary and calling for an early general council meeting, hinting at a potential resolution within the party.
