The newly elected MLAs of the AIADMK will convene in Chennai to discuss potentially backing actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government for up to a year. With TVK falling short of the majority needed to form a stable government, this move is gaining traction within the party.
In the recent Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, TVK emerged as the largest party but secured only 108 out of the required 118 seats for a majority. Consequently, Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar is likely to invite TVK to form the government. However, Vijay will need to demonstrate his majority in the House within a set timeframe once sworn in as Chief Minister.
Political analysts suggest that garnering the necessary numbers might pose a challenge for TVK, especially as Vijay will have to relinquish one seat, reducing TVK’s strength to 107. To survive the trust vote, TVK may need the support of around 11 to 12 additional MLAs.
Sources reveal that discussions are underway with parties from both the DMK-led and AIADMK-led alliances, with the Indian National Congress and the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) showing inclinations to support TVK. The potential backing from these parties could significantly impact Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.
