Signs of potential reconciliation have emerged within the AIADMK as Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay proceeds with his Cabinet expansion, including representatives from alliance partners VCK and IUML. This move seems to have impacted dissident leaders, prompting negotiation efforts to restore unity within the opposition party. Informal channels have been activated within the party, with negotiation teams working to bridge differences between factions led by EPS and rebel leaders Shanmugam and Velumani.
Sources reveal that intermediaries are facilitating talks between the camps, with the EPS faction emphasizing the withdrawal of rebel representation before the Election Commission as a key condition for reconciliation. On the other hand, dissident leaders are seeking the reinstatement of party functionaries removed during recent disciplinary actions before unity discussions progress. The dispute escalated when rebel members approached the Election Commission under a specific order dealing with disputes in recognized political parties.
Despite the tensions, leaders from the dissident camp clarified that their actions were not aimed at freezing the AIADMK’s symbol, indicating a willingness to withdraw the petition if mutual understanding is reached. The recent Cabinet expansion by Vijay, which included VCK legislator Vanni Arasu and IUML MLA A.M. Shahjahan, has further fueled hopes for reconciliation within the party. Velumani, a key figure in the rebel group, emphasized the absence of a split within the AIADMK and called for discussions on the party’s electoral performance.
As political circles observe these developments closely, there is anticipation regarding the formalization of reconciliation efforts into a reunification process for the AIADMK. The party aims to regroup and strengthen itself following a recent electoral setback.
