The AIIMS in Bhubaneswar has achieved a significant milestone by completing its inaugural liver transplant, as announced by Prof. (Dr) Ashutosh Biswas, the Executive Director. The procedure, which took place on a patient with liver failure on December 20, was a success, with both the donor and recipient now in stable condition.

Dr. Biswas commended the medical team’s expertise and dedication, emphasizing the challenging nature of this first liver transplant at AIIMS Bhubaneswar. The recipient, a 37-year-old from Pipili, Puri District, Odisha, is recovering well, while the donor, the recipient’s brother, has been discharged without complications.

The extensive surgery, involving over 50 team members and lasting 14 hours, was meticulously carried out with the support of various departments within the institute. AIIMS Bhubaneswar has further bolstered its transplant capabilities by establishing a specialized transplant ICU and operation theatre, aiming to extend these services to patients from Odisha and neighboring regions.
