Air Canada’s CEO, Michael Rousseau, has introduced a dedicated helpline and support team for families following a tragic runway collision at New York’s LaGuardia Airport that resulted in the deaths of two pilots and injuries to many. The incident involved Air Canada Express Flight AC8646 from Montreal colliding with a Port Authority fire truck during landing, leading to a significant emergency response and the temporary closure of operations at the airport. Rousseau expressed deep condolences and emphasized the airline’s primary focus on assisting passengers, crew, and their families during this challenging time.
The airline has mobilized a Special Assistance Team and established a helpline to aid families seeking information and support. With the flight operated by Jazz Aviation carrying a total of 76 individuals, including passengers and crew, Rousseau confirmed the tragic loss of the plane’s Captain and first officer in the accident. Authorities reported that 41 passengers and crew members were hospitalized, with some sustaining serious injuries, while two individuals in the fire truck were also hospitalized but in stable condition. The collision occurred as the fire truck was crossing the runway in response to another aircraft incident, moments before being struck by the just-landed Air Canada plane.
Air traffic control recordings captured the urgency of the situation, with controllers issuing warnings seconds before the crash. Images from the scene depicted significant damage to the aircraft’s nose and debris strewn across the runway, prompting extensive rescue efforts throughout the night. Air Canada is closely cooperating with investigative authorities to gather insights into the events, with the Federal Aviation Administration imposing a ground stop at LaGuardia and canceling over 500 flights due to the incident. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, urging the public to await official updates from the airline.
