An Air India flight traveling from Delhi to New York had to turn back to Delhi due to the closure of Iranian airspace affecting its route. The aircraft experienced engine damage when it sucked in a baggage container while taxiing in dense fog at the Delhi airport, as confirmed by the airline. The Directorate of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has initiated an investigation to determine how the foreign object ended up inside the engine.
The airline spokesperson stated that Flight AI101 was compelled to return to Delhi shortly after takeoff because of the unexpected closure of Iranian airspace, leading to a deviation from its planned route. Upon landing back in Delhi, the right engine of the Airbus A350 was damaged after encountering a foreign object during taxiing in foggy conditions. The aircraft was safely parked, ensuring the well-being of all passengers and crew members on board.
Air India has grounded the aircraft for a comprehensive inspection and necessary repairs following the incident. The airline has cautioned about potential disruptions on specific A350 routes and is actively working on alternative travel arrangements and refunds for affected passengers. Air India expressed regret for any inconvenience caused to passengers and emphasized its commitment to prioritizing safety and providing assistance during this period.
