The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has refuted claims that the investigation into the Air India Flight AI-171 accident has been concluded. The AAIB emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and no final conclusions have been made yet. The Preliminary Report shared earlier contained factual details available at that time, with the Final Investigation Report, including conclusions and safety recommendations, to be released upon completion of the investigation in accordance with international norms.
The AAIB conducts its investigations in strict adherence to the Aircraft (Investigation of Accidents and Incidents) Rules, 2025, and India’s commitments under ICAO Annex 13. These investigations are evidence-based processes aimed at identifying root causes and improving safety standards. The AAIB has urged media outlets to show restraint and avoid premature speculation, highlighting that unverified reporting can cause unwarranted public concern and compromise the integrity of the ongoing professional investigation.
Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol informed the Rajya Sabha that the AAIB is thoroughly investigating the Air India Flight AI-171 crash in Ahmedabad from all perspectives and is working towards concluding the investigation promptly. The Minister emphasized that all potential causes leading to the accident are under scrutiny, with a commitment to adhere to ICAO rules for a comprehensive investigation.
The tragic Air India Flight AI-171 crash occurred shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad airport, resulting in the loss of 241 passengers and crew on board the aircraft and 19 individuals on the ground on June 12, 2025. A preliminary report by the AAIB revealed that both engines of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner lost thrust due to fuel cut-off switches being moved to the ‘CUTOFF’ position. However, the cockpit voice recorder indicated that one pilot did not turn off the fuel control switches, which were subsequently returned to the ‘RUN’ position just before the crash.
