Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and NCP working president Supriya Sule joined forces for the first time since their split in June 2023, unveiling a joint manifesto for Pune’s progress. This move, marking a significant shift in Maharashtra’s political landscape, aims to strengthen the NCP’s position in the upcoming civic elections. The alliance, focused on Pune Municipal Corporation and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation polls, seeks to thwart BJP’s bid for a second term by avoiding vote division.
The manifesto outlines key urban development pledges, including enhancing infrastructure, water management, and urban mobility in Pune. Plans include expanding the Pune Metro, easing traffic congestion with new flyovers and electric buses, and upgrading water supply and sewage systems. Additionally, the initiative emphasizes environmental efforts like preserving hills, river rejuvenation, and establishing skill development centers for local youth.
While the alliance signals unity at the local level, internal discord has surfaced, with some leaders initially opposing the collaboration. Despite this, the top leadership is determined to fortify the Pawar family’s stronghold in Pune. The joint effort underscores a practical approach to local governance, emphasizing shared goals for the city’s advancement.
