The Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of the Sikhs, has issued a one-month ultimatum to the AAP government in Punjab to remove objectionable clauses from the recently enacted Jagat Jyot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkaar (Amendment) Act, 2026. This directive follows all Sikh legislators and ministers agreeing to review the law, leading to its temporary suspension.
Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj raised concerns over the legislation’s attempt to define religious terminology and objected to specific provisions, such as replacing “Bir” with “Saroop” and the SGPC’s role in printing Guru Granth Sahib Birs. He also questioned the lack of community consultation before the Bill’s passage.
In response to the Akal Takht’s directive, lawmakers assured that amendments aligning with Sikh religious sentiments would be made within the stipulated timeframe. The five-member clergy, including Akal Takht Jathedar Gargaj, emphasized the need for amendments in accordance with Sikh beliefs.
Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan highlighted the meaningful discussions held with Punjab Assembly members and Cabinet Ministers, expressing reverence for the institution and Guru Granth Sahib Maharaj. Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema confirmed the one-month reprieve granted by the Jathedar for reviewing proposed amendments.
